This challenge involoves the use of a robot using LEGO motors to lift a weight. The deadline is 12/25/08.
Your robot will be judged in the following catagories:
• Weight Lifted
• Speed of Weight Lifted
• Stationary or Freely moving
• Creativity (As in how the weight is lifted and how the robot looks)
• Parts used (Minimal is more points and Electric RCX parts has (some) bonus points(though to keep the spirit of NXTGallery, we would appreciate NXT))
• Description and Details Provided in the Author’s Notes.
The parts can be any part that is LEGO. All LEGO robots will be given more points than ones with non-LEGO elements. (Yes even your lifting string will be counted non-LEGO.) The only non-LEGO elements that are allowed is the string and weight.

UPDATE: Due to no contestants (yet...) I have chosen to extend the contest and make the deadline on 12/25/08. I hope by then, some members might have more time to make their robot.
UPDATE: There is a new limitation to contestants: No lamps are allowed to participate, no vacuum cleaners either.

The parts can be any part that is LEGO. All LEGO robots will be given more points than ones with non-LEGO elements. (Yes even your lifting string will be counted non-LEGO.) The only non-LEGO elements that are allowed is the string and weight.
Rules:
- • Weight must be lifted off 3 inches off the ground.
- • Timer must be initiated once lifting of the weight has initiated and should stop once the weight is at 3 inches above ground level.
- • User is allowed to use a sensor to tell the NXT it should stop the timmer and stop lifting.
- • The use of an Ultrasonic Sensor to tell it is three 3 inches is not allowed due to innacuracy of the Ultrasonic Sensor.
- • The Video must show the timer starting and stopping.
- • Program of the robot is most appreciated.
- • Use of non-LEGO elements besides string and weight is not allowed.
- • Aiding the NXT at any point besides pushing or activating a sensor to tell it to stop/start is not allowed.
- • All energy on lifting the weight must be provided directly or indirectly by the NXT/RCX motors.
- • In the video we would like to see a ruler showing CM or In next to the weight showing it has reache 3 inches.
Guidelines:
- • Proof that the robot is able to lift that much weight you have specified.
- • All submittions should be sent via email with your username, robot’s name, a link to your robot’s NXTGallery page, and the robot’s description.
- • You can only submit one entry.
- • The deadline is 11/25/08.
- • Adding more information on your robot page after the deadline but before the judging should be OK, we just need to be notified of the update.
- • If you submit an entry and then want to change it just email us back and it should be OK.
Of course, the most important rule is: have fun!

Hopefully I will enter this one.
Are you allowed to use two NXTs?

Just make a pneumatic scisoor lift. Pump it up before hand, and ”start the program” by flicking a valve over. Easy!

To NXTBoy:
That still conflicts with the rules. Sorry but this challenge isn’t supposed to be easy.
I’ll need to add that all energy must be provided directly or indirectly by the NXT/RCX motors.
To Mini_Man176:
Sure, but just remember that you will be marked down on the part used category. Unless you have anything to gain from using two NXTs... well the option is up to you.

Hmmm... I have a few ideas on how I’m going to do this but I’m not quite sure...
I’ll just have to try them out and see!

To Silcanter:
Yes the use of any LEGO element is allowed. The only non allowed are Non-LEGO elements (besides the weight and string) if you think any other element should be allowed, just ask me! I’m pretty sure I missed out a few things that would be OK. Just for a reminder, every extra part that I am able to see would cost some points, but the tank or ram looks pretty cool so you can win some there. Just remember that it is up to you for which LEGO parts to use.

Yes. To make it harder. Well don’t let that limit you. The appeared amount of elements would be compared to others to see which one had the least elements. Though don’t let that limit you! The total score is graded on a rubric of added scores (I’ll think of one way if that doesn’t work out well...) .
Remember to have fun!!!

What about the string that comes with the LEGO crane? That is a lego piece! Also, what should the weight be?

Using non-LEGO or LEGO strings are fine. More points would be rewarded to fully LEGO lifters. The weight can be anything and can be as heavy as much you can put on it.

8 Days guys, I hope at least one of you participate...

It doesn’t look like I’m going to be able to get my bot built in time... I have a retreat coming up this weekend and exams this week...

Due to no contestants, the deadline has been extended to 12/15/08. I hope that by then, members have enough time from school/work to build their robot.
Happy Holidays!

Same here: I have a bot built but not the time to program it our buy batteries. I’ll probably be able to get it done by Christmas. BTW, I have a friend that also built one of these and is planning to submit...
So you will have at least 2 posts!

Excellent! I’m looking forward to seeing your creations. As for me I don’t think I should make any more empty promises, I just don’t have enough time to make a robot myself. It will work out better that way anyhow because then I can help judge.
